Web 2.o Tools

In my technology class we have been reviewing a variety of Web 2.0 tools to use in the classroom. With the help of my other classmates we have looked at tools to use for slideshows, audio/video, digital storytelling, comics, timelines, maps, presentations, collage, maps, and finally collaboration. Look for a future post with a review on tools for each of these categories.

Cecil County has had a subscription to Discovery Education for years, but with the change and merging with Google this past year, there have been some major changes to the site! So this year in CCPS we have been focusing a great deal on Discovery Education. When I had a chance to make a screencast on how to use Discovery Education Board Builder, I jumped on it! Note: If you don’t have a subscription to this site, the link might not work for you. You can use this tool in so many ways, lab reports, class newspapers, author studies, analyzing book characters, storytelling and more! Discovery Ed has included an article listing 50 ways to use Board Builder. It is fantastic!

I have created a screencast to show students and staff how to create a board in Board Builder. I made a board on Ancient Greece that I will show in an introductory lesson to my 4th grade students. 4th grade is working on Green Gods in their classrooms and I will use this topic to tie into what I am doing in the media center. They will initially view a video on Ancient Greece and in their table groups they will generate keywords to write questions about what they would like to learn about Ancient Greece. After we have researched Greece, students will create a board showcasing what they have learned. The standard for the introductory lesson is below.

AASL standard: 1.2 C – Keywords can be generated for inquiry-based projects

Check out this screencast to learn learn how to use this amazing tool in Discovery Education. I promise that you (and your students) will love it!
